Internships

The Industry's Future

Since 2000, the Bay Area Intern Program has introduced students to the many different career paths available within the construction industry.  The Bay Area  sheet metal industry includes great salaries, innovative technologies, collaborative environments, and is a leader in creating energy efficient buildings.

Bay Area SMACNA Interns

Students can pursue two different paths for internships: through office/administrative roles or through the shop and/or field.

Those seeking office roles are encouraged to contact local BAS contractors in their area for potential openings. Many of our members have hired interns with studies and interests in areas such as:

  • Mechanical engineering or engineering
  • Estimating
  • Design
  • Purchasing
  • Accounting
  • Project Management
  • Marketing, and more

Traditionally intern candidates have also been able to work in the shop and/or field per our annual agreement with Local 104. Students work directly with BAS employers to arrange for these opportunities.

For 2024, these shop/fieldinternships include:

  • $22.00 minimum per hour pay.
  • Program work opportunities between 4/29/24  through 9/27/24.
  • One shop/field intern (high school, community college or college student) per contractor.
  • Mandatory participation in training session through BAS.

Detailed information on sheet metal and HVAC roles within the office or trades can be found at www.choosebigger.com

Student interns who work for a Bay Area SMACNA (BAS) contractor the year before or the summer after being awarded a BAS scholarship will receive an additional 50% on top of their scholarship.
