Labor and Management Discuss BT Service Strategy
We’ve kicked off 2023 with a number of meetings discussing topical issues. Recently, Bay Area SMACNA President Keith Atteberry, Executive Vice President Sean O’Donoghue, and SMW Local 104 President and Business Manager Rick Werner have met with key contractor and labor representatives to discuss issues and opportunities to capture more District 1 BT Service work.
Recruiting and retention is a primary concern in the current tough labor market, and many contractors have current openings they need to fill today and for succession planning. Subcommittee members agreed to tackle initial objectives, including increasing understanding of and simplifying job classifications, and streamlining the recruitment and assessment of candidates organized into the union for better alignment to existing contractor needs. Other initiatives include looking at the best options to reskill existing BTSM journeypersons on the out-of-work list to current BT Service opportunities.
